Aguero says Top Four place is a main priority

Sergio Aguero aims to fight off Manchester United’s bid to grab Manchester City’s top four place when the sides clash in the derby on Sunday.

The Blues’ strike ace is closing on of a couple of goalscoring records in the city’s showpiece match.

But all he cares about is clinching a victory that keeps the Blues ahead of United and West Ham in the scramble for Champions League places next season.

And he still harbours hopes of reviving the chase for league title which he admits is “slipping further and further away”.

Aguero, with eight goals in eight derbies, is just three goals short of Wayne Rooney’s derby record of 11, and also close to Eric Cantona’s top strike rate of eight goals in seven games.

And he said the joy of reaching the QF stage of Champions league for the first time has already been forgotten as thoughts turn to the 171 meeting of the Manchester teams

“We have to win, even more so because the title is slipping further and further away, and we have to make sure we take fourth place,” said Aguero.

“We want the title, but we have to take into account that United are right behind us and it will be a tough game, we will have to play intensely.”

Aguero has done more than anyone to give City a better derby record than United in recent seasons, with six goals in his last four.

He said: “Over the last five years City have always competed hard in the derby, but at one point United were huge – City have invested a lot of money to bring in quality players, and that has levelled the playing field.”
